PEEK is the material every engineer dreams about — until they see the price. PPS is the one they quietly spec when the budget review comes around. Here is the uncomfortable truth: for a large share of high-temperature applications, the cheaper material is not a compromise. It is the correct engineering answer.

Where PEEK struggles

  • Price — typically several times the cost of an equivalent PPS grade, before you add the higher processing temperature (~350°C+) and tooling demands
  • Not chemically unbeatable: hot halogen environments (bromine, chlorine, fluorine chemistry) attack it where PPS holds up
  • Narrow processing window that raises part cost for complex geometries

PPS: The Workhorse the Industry Overlooks

Polyphenylene sulfide is a simple molecule — a benzene ring and a sulfur atom — that delivers an extraordinary property package. In the energy, chemical and electronics industries, PPS is often the smarter spec: it covers most of the high-temperature duty at a fraction of PEEK's cost.

  • Outstanding chemical resistance — hot acids, aggressive solvents and steam, extending beyond what PEEK tolerates
  • Superior dimensional stability: extremely low moisture absorption and low CLTE keep precision parts in tolerance for years
  • Inherently self-extinguishing (UL94 V-0 without flame-retardant additives)
  • Glass/carbon/PTFE-filled grades deliver high strength and excellent wear — in several filled formulations, wear performance exceeds unfilled PEEK
  • Cost: a fraction of PEEK, with easier processing around 300–340°C

Where PPS struggles

  • Unfilled grades are brittle — low notched impact and poor ductility under shock loading
  • Lower continuous service ceiling than PEEK (~220°C typical; 240°C+ in filled grades)
  • Requires fillers for peak mechanical performance; base-resin strength is modest

How to Choose: When the Premium Is Worth It

Choose PEEK when

  • Continuous service above ~230–240°C with load-bearing duty
  • Impact, fatigue or bending loads — toughness is non-negotiable
  • Hot water / steam / hydrolysis environments
  • Medical implants, food contact, semiconductor ultra-purity

Choose PPS when

  • Aggressive chemical exposure — hot acids, solvents, downhole or subsea duty
  • Precision tolerances that must hold for years (valves, seals, pump parts)
  • Flame-retardancy requirement without additive cost or risk
  • Cost-sensitive production runs — the "over-engineered" PEEK spec

In practice: if the design review asks "can we afford PEEK?" and the answer hurts, re-run the spec against the PPS column above. More often than expected, the part lives happily in PPS territory.

Three Misconceptions Worth Clearing Up

  1. "PPS is just a budget PEEK." They are different polymer families with different strengths. PPS beats PEEK on chemical resistance and dimensional stability — it is not a downgrade, it is a different profile.
  2. "PEEK wins every environment." Not hot halogen chemistry. Bromine, chlorine and fluorine environments degrade PEEK where PPS stands firm — a real-world failure mode in chemical processing.
  3. "High temperature always means PEEK." Continuous temperature is what matters. PPS covers 220°C continuous — and glass-filled grades push well beyond — which covers the majority of industrial sealing and bearing applications.
