Borated and High-Nitrogen Dispersants: Managing Soot and Sludge in Low-SAPS CK-4 and SP Engine Oils

As emission limits squeezed sulfated ash down, the dispersant became the most heavily loaded component in the additive package - often 25-45% of it. EGR loops and DPF regeneration push soot into the oil faster than ever, and low-SAPS chemistry leaves less room for metallic detergents. Borated and high-nitrogen PIBSI dispersants are how modern CK-4 and SP oils carry that load.

Why soot is harder to manage now

Soot particles enter the oil from incomplete combustion and EGR recirculation. Left alone they agglomerate, thicken the oil, abrade cam lobes and settle as sludge. A dispersant wraps each particle in a PIB-soluble shell so it stays suspended and harmless - but that capacity must survive an ever-tighter ash budget.

Inside a PIBSI dispersant

Every succinimide dispersant pairs a polyisobutylene tail, which dissolves in oil, with a polar succinimide head, which anchors to soot and sludge precursors. Mono-succinimides give clean sludge control in gasoline oils; bis-succinimides carry more head groups and handle heavy diesel soot.

Two upgrades matter for current specifications. Raising nitrogen content increases the number of anchoring heads, improving soot capacity. Borating the molecule adds antiwear and antioxidant function without adding ash - one reason borated dispersants have become standard in CK-4 and SP packages, often allowing ZDDP to be trimmed.

Dosage and compatibility

Typical treat rates run 3-8% depending on the oil category. Verify the grade against your detergent and ZDDP in bench oxidation and soot-thickening tests before committing, and confirm chloride specification where seals and copper are a concern - modern thermal-process grades are chloride-free by design.
