API SP and SN Plus Explained: LSPI Control, GPF Protection and Molybdenum Friction Modifiers in Gasoline Engine Oils

What changed from SN to SP, and what it asks from your additive package

API SP replaced SN as the licensing standard for gasoline engine oils, carrying forward the SN Plus anti-LSPI requirement and adding tighter controls on chain wear, deposits and emission-system protection. For blenders, SP is not a paperwork change: it reshapes the detergent system, the ash budget and the role of molybdenum friction modifiers in the package.

What API SP actually changed

SP formalized low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) protection, tightened timing-chain wear limits, raised the bar on deposit and sludge control, and aligned with ILSAC GF-6 fuel-economy targets. Oils blended to SP must do all of this while keeping emission systems clean.

LSPI: the problem SP was built for

In small, turbocharged, direct-injection engines, oil droplets escaping into the chamber can ignite ahead of the spark - low-speed pre-ignition - with enough violence to crack pistons. The suppression tools are formulation tools: balanced calcium and magnesium detergents, controlled TBN, and friction-modifier chemistry that does not seed pre-ignition.

Where molybdenum friction modifiers fit

Organic molybdenum compounds form low-shear sacrificial films on friction surfaces, cutting friction beyond what ZDDP alone achieves and helping oils meet GF-6 fuel-economy levels without over-thinning. Packages such as JD3092 build moly chemistry in from the start; JD3091 covers the SP / SN Plus core requirement set.
